For a while, ice skating was all that I talked about every time had to write a “Describe a time when you showed perseverance” essay. I encountered my first pair of roller skates as a birthday gift in second grade and slowly graduated to ice skating in 3rd grade. It wasn’t until fourth grade that my parents realized I probably needed something to do in my free time. Thus, my weekends of lessons, practicing, and Jason Deli lunches began.
For three years I powered through the levels Basic 1-8 and Freeskate 1-6 and finally concluded my inchoate ice skating career in the level Pre-preliminary. During this time, I met two great friends Serena and Lingxi who I practiced with every weekend. Eventually Serena switched to roller skating and Lingxi moved to Seattle. Beginning middle school proved to be a greater adjustment than I had expected and ice skating fell out of my scope for the future. Since then, it has been a struggle of regaining and preserving the skills I worked so hard to develop. For many years I would go to the rink a couple of times per year, each time rediscovering the passion that fueled me to start figure skating so many years ago (even though I ironically have a horrible cold tolerance). Recently, these thoughts have started surpassing the reasonable side of my mind telling me that junior year is keeping me pretty busy and I’ve tried to re-incorporate ice skating into my routine. Come along on my journey to dominate the rink :).
